Do not be put off by the title. This is a fascinating, well-researched and timely publication, reminding readers of the rich variety of drama that has gone on, often uncelebrated, in England this century. As well as offering a high quality and much needed historical survey, the book ends with an attempt to reconceptualise drama in the classroom by offering a synthesis of views which have been polarised too often. ... the strength of this book is in its accessibility. The language is clear, jargon free and learning is worn lightly. Drama teachers and educators will enjoy reflecting on the history of their subject and arguing about the conception of classroom acting. It would be a shame if other colleagues felt the title excluded them.
