This analysis of African-Caribbean community organisations is based on original research in 93 Leeds groups and in major organisations there and in London. The research found that African-Caribbean activists feel excluded from existing voluntary and statutory organisations and perceive there to be racism and social exclusion from key areas of society such as education, health care and employment. Community activity can not only precipitate change, it can also foster a positive sense of collective and individual identity.
This book will be essential reading for members of all such organisations and provides new information for researchers, students and policy-makers. It shows how groups can overcome certain external barriers of racism and social exclusion but also how within each group, internal barriers have to be dealt with, based principally on age differentials, gender divides and differences to do with place of birth and dwelling.
Dr Hylton the Moyenda Project Development Worker at Thomas Cram Foundation for Children and a research consultant at the School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds. He is a community activist in African and African-Caribbean education, arts and cultural groups in Leeds.
