This revised edition of the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale - Extension (ECERS-E) transforms the research edition published in 2003 into an immensely practical handbook for providers of early education.

The ECERS-E was developed by Kathy Sylva, Iram Siraj-Blatchford and Brenda Taggart as an instrument to measure quality in literacy, numeracy, science and diversity as observable in pre-school settings. The sub-scales accord with the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage and are an internationally recognised measure of quality in early education and care.

This practical new edition has drawn on collaboration around the world and particularly with researchers using the scale in UK in large-scale research studies and as self assessment for early years settings. They have clarified and improved it, so transforming the instrument into a valuable manual for institutional self-assessment and for improving pedagogy and curriculum in pre-school settings so that young children's learning and development can flourish.

Kathy Sylva is Professor of Educational Psychology at University of Oxford. She has researched extensively in the education and care of young children.

Iram Siraj-Blatchford is Professor of Early Childhood at the Institute of Education, University of London. Her research interests include early childhood curriculum and pedagogy. She has published widely on issues of Early Childhood quality and equality.

Brenda Taggart is the Research Co-ordinator of the Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) Project at the Institute of Education, University of London. Her background is in primary education research.
