The average child in Britain watches about 30 hours of television per week - several hours more than the time spent in school. There is no doubt that television acts as a powerful "image-maker" of Black people both in Britain and overseas - an image that is generally though often subtly, disparaging.
Edited by John Twitchin of BBC TV's Continuing Education Department, this book offers a comprehensive analysis of media representation of black people together with detailed examples of racial bias, and practical teaching strategies and references to material for teachers - and their trainers - for examining this bias in classrooms, staff rooms and colleges.
Contributors include : Zeinab Badawi, Bhikhu Parekh, Jim Pines and Salmon Rushdie on aspects of media representation; Laura Sparrow, Brian Thompson and Alec Roberts on teaching the media in school. It provides systematic analyses of video aids - such as the Black and White Media Shows shown on BBC in 1986, 87, and 90 and Mosaic shown in 1989/90 - which are available at Teachers' centres - and information about how to use them.
It also offers a more general range of materials and exercises for any groups of teachers in initial or in-service training or elsewhere, who wish to explore racial attitudes in education and the media.
