This series offers a timely observation of the changes in young people's socialisation in Europe. How young people learn to understand their own societies and the societies of their neighbours will influence the future development of social and political institutions. The ways higher education institutions educate social workers, teachers, early childhood workers and youth workers about social understanding and learning needs to be informed by contemporary European policies and practices.

The series comments on current developments and research. Published in association with CiCe - the European union Thematic Network Programme 'Children's Identity and Citizenship in Europe' - the volumes offer reflection, analysis and contextualisation of recent findings, locate these in pedagogic practice, and point to their educational implications.

The social flux that characterises contemporary Europe affects young people's developing views of the societies and communities in which they are growing up. Consequently, it affects their own emerging sense of identity.

The consequences are both theoretical and practical, and both are explored here. Does the practice of professionals who are responsible for the education and care of young people reflect contemporary changes in society? Do educators simply reproduce the social patterns of earlier generations, or can they socialise children to be prepared for change? Writers from different disciplines, cultures and pedagogies address these issues with sharp insight.

The book is for professionals who work with children and young people in all disciplines and in all of Europe.
