In October 2001 the Open University introduces a new modular programme for initial teacher training for secondary teaching. Although intended for initial students many existing teachers will find these up to the minute texts invaluable updates on the statutory requirements of the subject audits. All include practical and theoretical activities for readers to undertake and questions for them to answer.

This book covers aspects of subject knowledge relating to: inputs and outputs in systems; feedback; introduction to circuits; transistors, resistors and capacitators. The main focus is on digital systems. There is also focus on electronic and computer-based systems, but reference is also made to pneumatic, hydraulic and mechanical systems.

Gwyneth Owen-Jackson is a Lecturer in Education at the Open University and Line Co-ordinator for the PGCE Design and Technology. She is an external examiner for Design and Technology and a scrutineer for the QCA.

John Myerson is an independent consultant for Design and Technology and an ICT teacher adviser for Surrey LEA. He also works for the Design and Technology Association as a CADCAM trainer and for the QCA as Principal Scrutineer for GCSE and 'A' level D&T.
