The European Cultural Foundation commissioned the writing of, "Europe: a leap in the dark," in the hope that it would serve as a catalyst to understanding the realities of Europe today. This work does not necessarily reflect the views of the Foundation but it does share them.
The book is divided into three parts.

The first restates that humanity today is facing a common destiny. This brings consequences for the future: the necessity of creating world-wide organizations capable of resolving world problems. The question is, who will lead this evolution?

The author examines the chances for the United States, the USSR, China and Islam to play this role and concludes that Europe's chances are best, as the idea of unity amongst a, diversity of opinions still thrives in Europe. But this chance may be lost as a result of the nationalist divisions between European countries.

The second part of the book expressly entitled "Europe", analyses the problems which confront Europe today.

The third part describes the world situation; the dangers to be avoided, and the tasks to be accomplished.

The book concludes by appealing to moral and spiritual forces to reinvigorate our civilization: "Europe is one of many civilizations or it is nothing at all". The real problem is seen to be that Europe is in a state of decline more for psychological reasons -lack of faith in its future - than for its present day concerns.

Henri Pirenne said: "The essential thing is to encourage reflection" and this is the spirit of the book.
