Britain has a Hindu population of over 360,000, many of them British Born children. Hindu Children in Britain, based on a five year research project, vividly portrays the diversity of the religious and ethnic backgrounds and experience, analysing their responses to their families and wider social contacts.

It examines the self-perception of Hindu children and the roles children learn in the family. It describes their distinctive experience of food and fasting, festivals, prayer and worship, the significance in their lives of gurus, babas and religious movements and considers the contribution of the arts and formal teaching to the processes of cultural transmission. Hindu tradition is seen to be changing, but certainly not in decline.

This, the first published study of Hindu children in Britain, will be of interest to Hindus themselves and to students, teachers, teacher educators, social scientists and all concerned with minority communities, religious studies, the British interfaith scene and with childhood.

The authors have written widely on religious groups in England. Robert Jackson is Reader and Eleanor Nesbitt is Research Fellow in Religious Studies at the University of Warwick.
