This study of the education, training and employment of asylum seekers and refugees in the UK is based on the academic and policy literature and empirical data from five major studies. It sets out the political context to seeking asylum in the UK, explores current policy and practice regarding the education, training and employment of new migrants over the age of 16 and shows how policy affects their access to appropriate services.

The book draws on extensive empirical research to explore the education and training needs and aspirations of new migrants, their skills, qualifications and work experiences and how these relate to education, training and employment opportunities currently on offer in the UK. It also examines the perspectives of training providers and employers on working with new migrants. The authors conclude that the Government's laissez faire approach needs to be replaced with well targeted and resourced integration programmes that offer a model for practice.

With its combination of policy and literature analysis, up to the minute academic research and clearly presented policy recommendations, New Migrants in the UK will be invaluable to policymakers, academics and service providers.

Dr Jenny Phillimore undertakes research on the employability of new migrants and other excluded groups at the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies, University of Birmingham.

Dr Lisa Goodson is a lecturer at the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies, specialising in qualitative methodologies and policy research in relation to new migrants.
