This is the first in a series of papers on Social Issues and Equity to be published by Trentham Books for the Faculty of Education at the University of Central England. The series is based on research studies carried out by course members on the MA in Equal Opportunities programme.
This course, though based in the Faculty of Education, is not restricted to the field of education. It extends across the public sector to the private sector and voluntary organisations, and attracts course members from a wide range of professions.

Kevin FitzGerald's study identifies a gap in the through care provision offered by the Probation Service under the 1991 Criminal Justice Act. No provision is made for short-term offenders, and its absence may be a contributory factor in the return of many of them to criminal activity after their release. As a result of interviews with prisoners carried out soon after sentence and shortly before their release, Kevin FitzGerald is able to shed important new light on the procedures they experience and the extent to which their needs are met. His research provides the basis for proposals for improving provision which should prove useful for all those involved in this field.
