This book challenges some of the preconceptions about early childhood development - for example that children cannot understand issues to do with fairness, or with skin colour or disability or homophobia - by clearly explaining relevant theory and research, and by giving examples of good practice.

It encourages students and adults to talk constructively about issues of discrimination.

Babette Brown won the Guardian Jerwood Award in 1997 for her Charity EYTARN - the Early Years Teachers Antiracist Network - which set up eleven years ago and which has members in South Africa (where Babette was born) and North America as well as all across the UK. She is a qualified and experienced early years teacher and her articles for Nursery World are widely used in Training.

Reviews

By outlining real scenarios, she illustrates how prejudice can manifest itself in the nursery. She then offers practical suggestions on how to tackle such situations.- Nursery World

...this commonsensical approach, suffused with warmth and understanding, and developed over years of experience in the classroom...that informs Babettes work. - Times Educational Supplement

While challenging stereotypes... the book introduces us to good practice in relation to gender, culture, homosexuality and disability - Child Education
